2025 Janet Kramer Essay Contest

The League of Women Voters believes that we should all be informed citizens. This Essay Contest is named in honor of Janet Kramer, a charter member of the Brown County League of Women Voters founded May 25, 1971. Janet exemplified the spirit of the League of Women Voters in her dedication to community service and working to strengthen democracy.

This essay contest is being offered to students as an opportunity to think about issues related to the functions of our democracy, then through the process of writing an essay, develop and explain a position on the topic. Your entry should respond thoughtfully to the essay prompt. We ask you to seek information from reliable sources and properly cite references.

*Note* Please make sure you are utilizing the correct entry packet for your grade. Multiple awards are offered for each age group.

Education Study

A number of LWVBC members met January 25, 2017 to discuss the State League's Study of High-stakes testing in Indiana schools. There are several comments in this document referring to formative vs summative tests.

The definitions are:

Formative tests – The goal of formative assessment, including diagnostic testing, is to allow modification of teaching and learning activities to improve student achievement. This is the method often used by teachers throughout the school year, but can also be used in standardized tests.

Summative tests - The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.
