Janet Kramer Essay Contest

 

The League of Women Voters of Brown County is now accepting entries for the 2026 Janet Kramer Essay Contest, an annual opportunity for local students to engage with civics, history, and democratic values. Open to Brown County students in grades 6–12, the contest invites young writers to reflect on the enduring relevance of one of America’s founding documents.

This year’s essay prompt asks students:

 

“How do you think the Declaration of Independence continues to influence our government and society today? Give specific examples.”

 

Students are encouraged to think critically about how the principles of liberty, equality, and self-governance continue to shape laws, institutions, and everyday life. Cash awards will be given in both divisions, with $250 for first place, $150 for second place, and $75 for third place. The contest deadline is Wednesday, March 4, 2026. The contest is offered in two divisions:
